Pest Control and Wasp Control Christchurch Dorset

The original name of Twynham, meaning “settlement between two rivers” was replaced when the priory was constructed in 1094 and the town became Christchurch. Being situated between the Stour and Avon rivers during Saxon times the harbour was one of the most important in Britain but this declined through the ages as it became inaccessible to larger vessels. It was due to the harbour and location of the town that many battles have raged in the area, not least between smugglers and exise men!

A walk through the centre of Christchurch in Dorset reveals its history around every corner including the magnificent priory and the ducking stool! The town became part of Dorset in 1974 and is the most easterly borough in the county having been established since 650 AD.

Important industry in the past has included fusee chains, used in watch making and clocks.  In 1847 the railway arrived and in 1903 a power station was built to power trams. In 1934 an airfield by Somerford road produced aircraft for the war effort which is now a large industrial estate and another airfield was opened in 1941 called Hurn which served many transatlantic destinations before London Heathrow! Between 1941 and 1942 the Bailey Bridge was developed at Christchurch Barracks which is now both a retail and housing development.

From the 18th century onwards a lot of housing has been built around Christchurch linking it to both Bournemouth and Highcliffe but the rivers have enabled nature reserves to be formed and large green areas to be established.

Because of the location on the rivers, Christchurch will attract the normal array of pests as water is needed by most for survival and provides a natural highway for both insects and mammals, so some form of pest control may be needed.  Rodents including Mice and Rats will always be able to forage for food and lodgings along waterways and as the town is located along the route it provides ideal opportunities. Problems will arise when high water levels are experienced during tidal phases when Mice and Rats will seek out shelter in properties close by.

Wasps and other insects will all follow the river courses and will actively seek out accommodation close by along with birds including pigeons and seagulls. Ants will always be an ongoing problem due to the texture of the soil locally. Moles will migrate from nearby farmland to road verges and exposed gardens depending on food levels available and seasonal traits. Rabbits will also be attracted to larger gardens to feast on shrubs and plants carefully planted.

With limited pockets of woodland available, Squirrels will quickly adapt to living in either domestic or commercial properties. The master of adaptation, the Fox will definitely be at home with plentiful supplies of food readily available and lots of quieter and secluded places to set up a home and family. Interaction between wild and domestic animals often leads to an increase in the outbreak of Fleas in particular areas, so vigilance is always required with pets.

If you have a problem with Ants, Fleas, Rats, Mice, Rabbirs, Squirrels, Birds, Moles,  Wasps or you need help with wasp control or wasp removal or pest prevention or have a pest control problem in and around Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Ringwood, Verwood or any BH postcode area  call No-Nonsense Pest Control :   01202 523469 or 07708 944620 or e-mail    nononsensepestcontrol@yahoo.co.uk.

Pest Control and Wasp Control Ferndown, Longham, Hampreston, Stapehill

$

It is believed that the name Ferndown came from the Anglo-Saxon word “Fiergen” which means wooded hill and up until 1925 many maps still showed it as two separate words. Today it still retains woodlands and heathlands around its borders and includes the communities of Longham, Hampreston, Stapehill and Tricketts Cross and is the largest town in East Dorset. In 1972 under local government re-organisation the parish was changed from Hampreston to Ferndown and it became a Town Council.

Ferndown has two golf courses so it is a popular area for golfers and to the west of the town is a large Industrial area serving the community.

Being close to large wooded areas it is only natural for nature to come into conflict with man and this is the case for Rabbits, Deer,  Moles and Squirrels which thrive on the surrounding countryside and often end up in gardens and in the case of Squirrels, inside properties. Ants also venture out from surrounding areas and enjoy both domestic and industrial properties in search of suitable nest sites along with other insects including Wasps and Bees.

Wasps are beneficial to the garden by removing aphids, flies and larvae, caterpillars and many other garden insect pests, they also help to pollinate plants and any damage they cause by nesting is minimal but if nesting sites occur where there is frequent contact with humans then some form of  wasp control or wasp removal will be needed. With the global changes in temperature, the wasp season has extended over the past couple of years and if a nest is immune from frost or cold, (a cosy loft) it could carry on later into the year.

With all this activity it is inevitable that rodents like Rats and Mice will be attracted to search out food and lodgings and take advantage of any easy meals, especially bird feeders, if left out for long periods.  (Fat balls are a particular favourite of the Rat.)  This in turn, attracts Foxes, who are top of the food chain with no obvious predators except Man.  Nesting birds in nearby properties may cause damage and introduce unwanted insects.

Man can live with nature if proper pest control or pest prevention is maintained, it is when nature gains the upper hand when problems occur.

If you have a problem with Ants, Fleas, Rats, Mice, Squirrels, Rabbits, Birds, Moles, Wasps or you need help with Wasp Control or Wasp Removal or Pest Prevention or have a Pest Control problem in Ferndown or around Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Ringwood, Verwood or any BH postcode area  call  No-Nonsense pest control :

Pest Control and Wasp Control Ringwood St Ives Poulner Three Legged Cross

The market town of Ringwood in Hampshire lies on the fringes of the New Forest and was a place of some importance in Saxon times being situated on the river Avon. At one time it relied on agriculture for its main income with the weekly market selling local produce and forest ponies.

In 1685 it could claim links to the battle of Sedgemoor when the Duke of Monmouth was held prisoner (Monmouth House) after his defeat and capture at Horton. He was eventually sent to London for execution. Another link to the battle was through Dame Alice Lisle who was alleged to have harboured two fugitives from the battle in her home. (Moyles Court School). She was sentenced to be burned at the stake but King James II committed this and she was instead beheaded and is buried at Ellingham church.

Ringwood relied heavily on the river Avon for its mills and the forest for wood for fuel and it has long been famous for knitted gloves, but in 1725 a brewery was set up using the waters of the river Avon for ale and continues to this day.

In 1800 a lot of building work commenced and in 1847 the railway arrived and in 1930 gravel extraction commenced which was followed by a water mains system that had largely been built by Welsh migrant workers being brought into use. This was followed in 1943 by Wellworthy Engineering opening a large works in the town.  Shortly after this housing developments were started in Avon Castle and St Ives and eventually Poulner.

Ringwood is surrounded by both the New Forest and farmland with the river Avon running through the west of the town. With the forest area so close it is inevitable that man will come into conflict with nature and this is often the case with deer from the forest entering gardens along with moles, rabbits and foxes all intent on feeding and possible harbourage. Squirrels will take up the challenge and seek out new feeding and resting places too.

The farmland will provide homes for any rodents including Rats and Mice that will naturally follow the course of the river and when flooding occurs they will seek out higher ground that will lead to conflict with man by entering properties within easy reach.

Wasps and bees along with other insects will use the river as a highway and wasps especially enjoy being surrounded by wooded areas both to nest in and for building materials to construct their nests in suitable areas including properties, garden hedges or bushes or just in the ground. It is when this happens and a conflict occurs that some form of wasp control or wasp removal will be needed.

If you have a problem with  Ants, Fleas,  Rats, Mice, Squirrels, Birds, Moles,  Wasps or you need help with Wasp control or Wasp removal or pest prevention or have a pest control problem in and around Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Ringwood, Verwood or any BH postcode area  call no-nonsense pest control :

Pest Control and Wasp Control Winton Moordown Talbot Village Redhill Ensbury Park Muscliffe

Much like Queens Park and neighbouring Charminster, Winton was heathland to the west of the New Forest and the area was known as “The Liberty of Westover” meaning west of the Stour. The principle land owner was the Earl of Malmesbury and the name appears on many of the deeds of houses in the area. It is surrounded by Ensbury Park, Muscliffe, Redhill, Moordown, Queens Park and Charminster and forms part of the borough of Bournemouth.

Around 1850 two sisters called Georgina and Marianne Talbot purchased land and set about building an area which became Talbot Village, to the east they sank wells and developed cottages and Winton was born, the name is thought to have come from their Scottish ancestry.

In 1880 Winton was in the parish of Moordown but in 1899 it was reversed and Moordown was a hamlet in the parish of Winton. In 1901 the district became part of Bournemouth. In 1902 trams were introduced and remained in service until they were replaced by trolley buses around the 1930s which lasted until 1969.

Aviation played a part in the history of Winton and there were two airfields nearby, the first was at Talbot Village between 1915-1917 and this was moved to a new location at Ensbury Park in 1918 and it became known as RAF Winton. After the war there were regular passenger services to London and a number of large airshows. Today it is the large housing development of Redhill.

Because of the nature of the soil Ants are likely to be encountered in gardens and occasionally properties, along with Wasps which will nest either in buildings or burrows in the ground. Bees are also a possibility due to the local landscape of parks and gardens.

With the River Stour close by forming a natural highway for animals, Rodents like Rats and Mice, will always be a problem should the correct conditions exist, certainly with the recent flooding. They are very good at adapting and taking advantage along with Squirrels who have no fear of man and find properties very appealing to nest in. Foxes will use the river and local properties to become part of their individual territories where they will thrive.

Moles can be found around Winton, both in grass verges and private gardens where they will happily tunnel away to collect their food of worms and underground insects.

Pigeons can be found in any busy town and Winton is no exception as can be witnessed with a stroll along Wimborne Road, but domestic properties are not immune as any loose or missing roof tiles can quickly be used to gain access to loft spaces where they will readily nest and could produce up to 7 broods a year.

Pest Control and Wasp Control in the Borough of Poole Dorset

Poole is located in Dorset with a shore-line on the English Channel and it has the largest natural harbour in Europe and the second largest natural harbour in the world. The harbour area itself contains several small islands including Brownsea which is owned by the National Trust and is well known for both migrating and nesting birds. The area also contains the largest onshore oil field in Britain.

To the west of Poole are Hamworthy and Upton with Corfe Mullen, Broadstone, Canford Heath and Oakdale to the north. Moving further clockwise to the east are found Newtown, Parkstone and Branksome whilst Lilliput, Canford Cliffs and Sandbanks can be found to the south-east. It is here that the sandy beaches stretch along Poole Bay all the way to Bournemouth.

As far as the natural environment is concerned the area around Poole can be described as heathland, with wooded chines and coastline which supports all six of the reptile species native to Britain. Although many developments have destroyed a lot of natural habitats certain areas have been protected and are designated nature reserves.  Nature has learned to adapt to man encroaching on natural habitat by using what is available to help it survive.

Poole has many suburbs that were originally towns or hamlets that became part of the borough and these include Alderney, Bearwood, Creekmoor, Fleetsbridge, Longfleet, Merley, Penn Hill, Sterte, Talbot Village, Wallisdown and Waterloo to name a few! As these smaller towns were established, animals that once lived on the heathland moved into the towns and adapted to a new way of life. Insects like Fleas that once lived on wild animals now thrive on domestic pets, Ants look to gardens or buildings to provide new housing, Wasps and Bees will look for sheltered accommodation, either inside or outside. Rats and Mice will be attracted by food sources that are produced by man, be it intentionally or otherwise and gardens will become homes to Foxes, Moles, Squirrels or Rabbits. Visiting Birds will take advantage of any food and lodging available to increase their numbers.

On top of this Poole has a large number of industrial estates including the Arena Business Park, Branksome Business Centre, Mannings Heath, Nuffield Industrial estate and Tower Park. These areas too can be susceptible to Rodent, Insect, Bird and Fox activity as the diversity of buildings and food sources increases.

We offer a no-nonsense approach to pest control and will supply a FREE no obligation quote along with helpful and honest advice on all aspects of pest control and pest prevention. HONEY BEE SWARM - no-nonsense pest controlWith warmer weather expected at this time of year, animals and insects will thrive and we can expect to see increased insect activity including Bees and Wasps. There are several hundred different types of bees that can be found in the UK and they can be classified into groups.

One of the main groups are social bees and these can include both Honey Bees and Bumble Bees.

Honey bees are very sociable and can live in groups of up to 50000 including a Queen, workers, drones and of course larvae, pupae and eggs. They are normally associated with bee hives, but can be found living in the wild in any suitable habitat including old trees and even buildings.

Bees are very beneficial to the environment and can go about their business often un-noticed, it is only when a swarm occurs that they really grab the attention! Swarms are caused when a colony becomes so overcrowded that a Queen takes off with part of the original colony to locate and establish a new nest. Before departing, all of the bees will fill up on nectar for the journey. The workers will form around the Queen, who is not a strong flyer, so at some point will have to rest and will settle on any convenient bush, branch or building. When this happens it is important to remain a good distance from the swarm, as if threatened, the bees may well sting.

BUMBLE BEE - no-nonsense pest controlBumble Bees live in smaller social groups of up to 150 and suitable habitat includes sheltered spots including dry compost heaps, under or in garden sheds and in buildings.

Another group are Solitary Bees, these, as the name suggests, live alone and can be found in holes in the ground, wood, cliff or quarry faces and masonry including bricks and mortar. It can be confusing as often holes can be found close together in suitable habitat suggesting a colony.TAWNEY MINING BEE - no-nonsense pest control

Solitary Bees are harmless and DO NOT STING and are beneficial to the environment. Both males and females are active from late April until mid – June and on warm sunny days they can be seen busy constructing a chamber, where they will lay their eggs, stock with nectar and pollen before finally sealing it. The eggs hatch as larvae and feed on the supply of food left in the chamber before finally pupating into a bee which may take up to a year. The adult bees will only live for a short period of time and by July would have died, before the offspring emerges.

NO-NONSENSE PEST CONTROL - FREE QUOTEWe are now halfway through the year and summer is with us bringing the warmer weather that we long for! With longer days and warmth it is the time to get out and about and enjoy our surroundings and that is exactly what our wildlife is doing.

Ants have been very busy invading homes across the region from Verwood to Poole and Christchurch to Ringwood, not forgetting the larger conurbations of Bournemouth and Boscombe.

squirrel damage - No Nonsense pest control

Rodents have been very active in properties both in rural and urban areas and numbers appear to be up on last year with more home intrusions being reported and dealt with locally. Rats and mice numbers have swelled due to the warm weather and plentiful food supplies which are readily available, squirrels are also taking advantage and as more areas are being developed, properties are falling victim to them.

Molehills - No-Nonsense pest controlIt has been a very good year for the mole so far and you do not have to travel far before spotting their molehills in verges, fields, paddocks and gardens, even sports pitches are proving a favourite. Once green lawns, have quickly changed into areas resembling a battlefield where these industrious creatures have been active.

Wasps are back with us again and choosing their own nesting places locally. So far I have dealt with a nest in a caravan, another in a bathroom extractor fan and a bird box along with the usual locations in lofts and eaves. The nests start small, but as wasp numbers rise in a nest and more workers emerge, the nest will quickly grow and they will make their presence known.

Fox Damage - No-Nonsense pest controlBees have been active as well, but mainly Bumble bees seeking out suitable locations to lay eggs and increase their numbers and it is important to try and preserve these insects, or if possible, relocate them to a safe place in the garden by using professionals.

Foxes have been producing litters and the cubs are now growing up rapidly and tormenting gardeners by entering properties and damaging lawns and plants and the next couple of months is when they are at their most active.

Birds have been getting in on the act with pigeons living in properties and bring all their associated problems with them and seagulls busy nesting on, both houses and taller buildings. With eggs or young chicks seagulls can be very aggressive and can cause injury.

With all this animal activity happening, our domestic pets may come into contact with fleas or ticks and it is important to remain vigilant for these parasites.

An Insight into Bees

$

As the calls for help regarding Bees and Wasps are now on the increase, it is a good idea to look into what Bees are likely to be doing during the coming year.

Bees, Bumblebees

Tree Bumblebee

Spring

Species of Solitary Bees are emerging from their respective holes and in some cases, causing alarm, because they are being mistaken for Wasps. Nesting areas can include holes in loose mortars of buildings and walls or from areas of short, mown grass, whilst others prefer bare soil.

As temperatures rise, Honeybees will be seen more frequently as they collect pollen for local hives.

Single Bumblebees can be seen foraging early in the mornings.

Summer

White Tailed Bumblebee

White tailed Bumblebee

Higher temperatures are more constant and the heat rises in local hives resulting in bee swarms consisting of a new queen and several thousand workers who “break off” from the hive in search of new homes for colonies.

The activity with other bees increases as they feed on nectar and pollen to increase strength levels and male Bumblebees along with queens are seen more frequently.

Autumn

All too soon as summer comes to an end, old Bumblebee colonies will die off and recently mated Queens will disperse to find places to hibernate including holes in the ground, old bird boxes, under leaves or thick tufts of grass or compost heaps and under log piles.

If a sunny day appears, some species will come out to feed including the Honeybee and some species of Solitary bees.

RED TAILED BUMBLEBEE TAKEN BY NO-NONSENSE PEST CONTROL

Winter

Most Bees will lay low, but if a rare sunny day appears with mild temperatures, Honeybees may venture out along with the hardy Bumble bee Queens. Bumble bees are furry and this allows them to remain active in colder weather. Solitary bees will remain in hibernation.

Summary

Bees are very important for the pollination of plants and crops and with a lot of the countryside declining, gardens are becoming the focus of attention and the key to Bee survival is the diversity of flowers that are grown to provide food all year round.

How Do Pests Gain Access To Properties?

$

It can be very distressing to be awoken out of a peaceful sleep by scratching, rustling or chewing noises in a property. When the shock has worn off it is time to investigate and see who or what has invaded!

Pests ranging from Rodents, (Rats, Mice and Squirrels) to Birds can be the likely culprits, however, Insects (Wasps,  Bees and even Ladybirds and spiders) can also make their presence known by noises and other means.

The problem usually starts outside where that particular pest has found a weakness in the structure of the building that it can easily exploit.

Ants need very small cracks or gaps to enter a property and along with Spiders they will readily explore inside for food and in some cases take up a more permanent residency.access for insects

Wasps and Bees are experts at exploitation and with a south facing wall with a suitable hole or gap, a nest will be quickly built and inhabited. Wasps can make loud “crackling” noises whilst nest building.Wasps

Birds will readily explore and nest in suitable gaps or openings and the noise from newly hatched chicks can be easily heard at all times of the day and night! ROOSTING STARLING TAKEN BY NO-NONSENSE PEST CONTROL

Fleas have an easier ride into a property, either through the front door or a suitable pet flap. They will hitch a ride on any suitable warm blooded host, be it man or pet.

RAT ENTRY THROUGH AIRBRICK IN BOURNEMOUTH BY NO-NONSENSE PEST CONTROLRats and Mice are more subtle and will gain access by using their strong teeth to open new entrances or exploit weaker areas of a property, at ground level or higher.

Squirrels are real masters of access and will enter a property at all levels, even by airbricks at lower levels if able, but they  prefer to climb and enter higher up in a property causing untold damage in the process. Overhanging trees or bushes provide a good cover.TREES TOUCHING ROOF

Foxes will gain access by tunnelling under buildings to make their Dens and garden sheds are a particular favourite in quieter gardens or schools. Fences prove no match for their agility as they are able to go over or dig under.FOX ACCESS NEAR CHRISTCHURCH PHOTOGRAPHED BY NO-NONSENSE PEST CONTROL

Moles are impossible to keep out of gardens, fields, etc, as their constant tunnelling for food has no boundaries and they are able to cross many obstacles including roads and rivers.

It is a constant challenge to maintain a property, but if weaknesses are quickly repaired, the risks of a pest infestation is greatly reduced.

Bees have been active as well, but mainly Bumble bees seeking out suitable locations to lay eggs and increase their numbers and it is important to try and preserve these insects, or if possible, relocate them to a safe place in the garden by using professionals.

BIRDS-NESTING-ROOM WITH A VIEW IN POOLE BY NO-NONSENSE PEST CONTROL

Summer and Wasps and Bees.

wasp, wasp control by No-Nonsense Pest ControlSummer appears to have finally arrived and if we needed any confirmation then go out into the garden and look at the increase in the number of insects that are flying around!

This week has seen a dramatic increase in the call for wasps nests in the area, both inside and outside properties. Nests have varied in size as well as location, ranging from inside air bricks, in lofts, along, or in roof lines and even in ventilation grills.

It is VERY important to treat any potential wasps nest with the correct method or chemicals, if not, possible disaster or injury could follow. Wasp control should never be taken lightly, any wasp treatment should be carried out with suitable protective clothing or measures in place to protect the person carrying out the treatment.

wasps-nest-nononsense pest controlCalls concerning bees are still coming in several times a day, with initial confusion in identification being the main problem. A lot of bumble bees are selecting higher nesting areas this year, with a few others selecting bird boxes, under sheds and even a rabbit hutch!

Honey bees are still swarming and chimneys are still proving to be the favourite resting places.

DOES HOUSE INSURANCE COVER RODENT OR VERMIN DAMAGE?

$
0
0

NO-NONSENSE PEST CONTROL - FREE QUOTEHow often do we really read the small print and fully understand the consequences? With all the austerity measures currently being used to save money, insurance is one of the many areas we look to save money on and the results could end up costing thousands of pounds.

Household insurance policies that actually cover rodent damage in their wording are far and few between. Many have the following phrases included:

We will not cover: damage caused by wear and tear, settlement and shrinkage, vermin, insects, fungus, weather conditions, or any damage which happens gradually.” Or:

We will not cover: damage caused by wear and tear, light, weather conditions, moth, vermin, insects, fungus, damp, rust, wet or dry rot, or anything which happens gradually.”

Others go into actually listing specific pests:

loss or damage caused by rot, mildew, rust corrosion, insects, woodworm, rats, mice, squirrels, owls, birds, foxes, bats, badgers.”

There are other policies on the market that may include pest control as part of the cover, but even these can carry stipulations.

Home Emergency Cover;

We will not cover the following:

  • Ants, cockroaches, bedbugs, fleas, spiders, flies, birds, squirrels, bees or any other pest that may require specialist removal.
  • Rats or mice outside the main house on the property e.g. in detached garages, the garden and other detached outbuildings.
  • Pest infestations where you have not followed our previous recommendations on how to avoid such problems.
  • Problems where you cannot tell us the type of pest concerned.

● Damage caused by pests to your property and contents (e.g. if a rat chewed through your sofa)

Another one states that:

The following are covered in your policy

The treatment or removal of a pest infestation involving wasps, bees, hornets nests or cockroaches where the infestation is within your home.

In addition, the treatment of mice, rats and squirrels within your home.” And:

“The following are not covered in your policy

  • Removing infestations of pests in gardens or outbuildings.
  • Wasp, bee or hornet nests where no visible activity is apparent.
  • The removal of the wasp or hornets nest once treated.”

Several policies carry exclusion clauses, that if ignored will invalidate policies:

You must keep property that is insured under your policy in good condition.”

Or:

Exclusions: Pest infestation outside of the home. Infestation known to exist before the policy begins. Infestations where your home has been unoccupied for more than 60 days. An infestation where reasonable hygiene could have prevented the infestation. An infestation of bats or bees.”

Vermin, including rodents and insects, can in extreme cases, cause untold damage and misery to home owners if left un-treated and are free to roam properties.

It used to be that Autumn and Winter was the most likely time for unwanted intruders to enter properties because of the colder weather and subsequent lack of food available outside, however if access is readily available, entry could be at any time of the year and properties of any size, age or location are at risk.

House maintenance plays a crucial part of any pest prevention plan, as if any parts of the property are in decline, not only will it allow access to pests but may invalidate any insurance policy. Basic maintenance can include brickwork, guttering, woodwork or roofing, but foliage, trees and general landscaping can all play their part. Any trees that overhang a property or a shrub or vine that grows up a building wall could provide good cover or access. Maintaining your home or property in good condition not only ensures that your insurance policy remains valid, but it may also prevent you from having to make a claim in the first place which could not only be stressful but costly as well. If you are unsure about your own insurance policy contact your insurance company for clarification.

If you suspect that you have a rodent or an insect problem it is advisable to get professional help for pest removal as soon as possible to avoid the situation getting out of control and causing greater damage or financial loss.

Autumn is here!

foxes at play in a local Bournemouth gardenWith the Autumn equinox now with us, the days will get shorter and the nights longer and life in general tends to slow down a little?

Not so for animals and insects, the rush in on to feed up before possible hibernation, or to find suitable homes ready for the inevitable cold weather that will eventually arrive in the winter.

Rodents including rats, mice and squirrels are already testing new locations or even returning to areas previously used for nesting. To the owner of the properties involved this can be the start of possible distress and unexpected costs if left to develop.HORNET MIMIC HOVERFLY (3)

Insects including wasps, are feeding on any available food sources and a particular favourite being the late flowering ivy found in many gardens. The pungent smell given off can result in thousands of insects converging on a single bush to feed. It is not only wasps that are attracted but also flies, hoverflies and bees as well. The sight of so many insects together in one place can be quite alarming!

Foxes are busy, with the younger animals looking for new areas to inhabit and feed, with damaged lawns being the end result in many cases.

Also in our countryside, moles are still very much active and always on the lookout for fresh feeding grounds rich in insects and worms to feed on to sustain them through the coming months.

IVY IN THE GARDEN

Flowering IvyFor those people lucky enough to have a garden, now is the time to experience some unusual occurrences that only happen this time of the year, but the conditions have to be just right!

If you have sandy based soil and short grass with a sunny outlook, you may notice small holes appearing in the ground and insects busily excavating. It may be a couple, or hundreds depending on the location and the culprit is the Ivy Bee.IVY BEE

The Ivy Bee is a solitary bee and is the last to emerge in the year, normally mid to late September until November. Once mated, the female digs a burrow in loose sand or earth, in which are underground chambers which will contain several eggs and pollen for the larvae to feed on once the eggs have hatched. The female will die after a few weeks but the larvae will hatch and become adult bees to emerge in the late autumn. Although solitary by name, many females will dig burrows close together and numbers can reach several hundred. Nest sites are governed by a suitable location and food source being available and this is flowering ivy.

HORNET MIMIC HOVERFLY (3)Flowering Ivy provides a rich source of pollen for many insects and will attract large numbers of different insects and large numbers can be reached at any one time. Ivy Bees use ivy as their main food source but are in competition with wasps, bees, flies, hoverflies, hornets and butterflies, to name but a few. If the sun shines and the flowers bloom be prepared for a feeding frenzy to occur!FLY (Bluebottle) taken by No-nonsense Pesty Control

An Insight into Bees

White Tailed Bumblebee

White tailed Bumblebee

As the calls for help regarding Bees and Wasps are starting to increase, it is a good idea to look into what Bees are likely to be doing during the coming year.

Bees, Bumblebees

Tree Bumblebee

Single Bumblebees can be seen foraging early in the mornings.

Summer

Higher temperatures are more constant and the heat rises in local hives resulting in bee swarms consisting of a new queen and several thousand workers who “break off” from the hive in search of new homes for colonies.

The activity with other bees increases as they feed on nectar and pollen to increase strength levels and male Bumblebees along with queens are seen more frequently.

Autumn

BUFFTAILED BUMBLEBEE TAKEN BY NO-NONSENSE PEST CONTROL

Buff-tailed Bumblebee

All too soon as summer comes to an end, old Bumblebee colonies will die off and recently mated Queens will disperse to find places to hibernate including holes in the ground, old bird boxes, under leaves or thick tufts of grass or compost heaps and under log piles.

If a sunny day appears, some species will come out to feed including the Honeybee and some species of Solitary bees.
